Great City to Visit... Winchester

Winchester is a beautiful, historic city in Hampshire with connections to numerous famous people. King Alfred (crowned here in 871), Jane Austin and poet John Keats, to name a few. At the City's heart is the Cathedral where King Canute and William ll were buried, Henry lll baptised and Mary Tudor married to Philip of Spain.

One of Britain's national trails, The South Downs Way, begins...or ends in Winchester, taking you through stunning Hampshire and Sussex countryside to the cliffs of Eastbourne 160km away.  St Catherines Hill, on the edge of the City and St Giles Hill both have panoramic views over the city, for those shorter rambles.

The charming High Street offers little alleyways and squares with some great independent shops. Look also for its many historic buildings and museums clustered around the city all within easy walking distance of Mallard Cottage.

Winchester is  a thriving foodie scene with it's many daytime and evening eateries, pubs and restaurants. Rick Stein, The Ivy, River Cottage and The Michelin starred "Black Rat," are some of the names to be found.

The Great Hall, which for over 700 years has housed the mysterious King Arthur’s Round Table.

Winchester Cathedral, an awe inspiring 11th century building boasting one of the longest medieval naives in Europe (164m),

Winchester College set up by William Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester in 1393.

The Hospital of St Cross founded in 1132, by the grandson of William the Conqueror, Henry de Bois, a medieval almshouse, still offering the Wayfarer’s Dole to travellers.

The Farmers Market which is held on the second & last Sundays in the month.

Art & Design Market on the third Sunday of every month & The Antique Market on the first Sunday of every month.

The Winchester City Mill, built over the River Itchen in 1744, possibly one of the oldest working watermills in the country.

Also within reach is the South Downs National Park, starting place for the famous South Downs Way. Marwell Wildlife Zoo & Mid Hants Railway “Watercress Line.”

Annual events in Winchester include The Hat Fair, UK’s longest running festival of outdoor arts. Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market nestled in the Cathedral's grounds. The Watercress Festival in Aylesford. Boomtown music festival & CarFest.
